Tips for a Day in the Field

A day in the field doing user research brings limitless possibilities. Here are a few things to keep in mind that will help make your fieldwork go smoothly.

Be approachable
The naturally disarming effect of a genuine smile and a curious demeanor puts participants at ease, allowing dialogue to flow freely. Start by focusing on building rapport.

Get comfortable
Days in the field can be long and unpredictable, and poorly planned apparel has been the undoing of many a researcher. As far as field attire is concerned, function trumps form.

Pack sensibly
Good field researchers are savvy and efficient when it comes to packing. Count on a trusty backpack to hold your cameras, batteries and memory cards (more on this here). Don’t forget the jumbo water bottles, and definitely don’t forget the snacks!
